(Wahiawa, Hawai’i) – Col. Stacy Haruguchi, Hawai’i Wing Civil Air Patrol commander, presented the 53d Space Operations Squadron, Detachment Delta, and their
volunteer members with a certificate of appreciation for their support in educating and partnering with the Hawaii Wing CAP cadets and senior members, offering a look into their operations at their Wahiawa facility, Jan 14, 2023.
“It is a great honor for the members of Detachment Delta to be recognized by the Hawai’i Wing of Civil Air Patrol,” stated U.S. Space Force Capt. Nathaniel Shannon, Det. Delta commander Showcasing the vital mission that our Guardians perform day and night is essential to spreading public awareness of the U.S. Space Force and inspiring the next generation to serve in the warfighting domain of space.”
They were sharing operation support with, thus far, 90 Hawai’i Wing members, the 53 SOPS, Det. Delta provides a rewarding experience, giving cadets a Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite to build, touring their facilities, and sharing information about their operations. 53 SOPS, a unit of the sixth military branch and assigned to Space Delta 8, is responsible for managing transmission and payload functions of the WGS and Defense Satellite Communications System constellations, ensuring seamless mission command and connectivity for critical subscribers ranging from the president of the United States, national agencies, and international partners to warfighters across the globe.
Col. Haruguchi said, “The Hawai’i Wing is truly fortunate to have Space Force Guardians willing to sacrifice their weekends to teach our senior and cadet members about America’s newest branch of the U.S. military. We look forward to continued projects with them to advance space capabilities.”

Established in 1941, Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90% of all search and rescue operations within the contiguous United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Often using innovative cellphone forensics and radar analysis software, CAP was credited by the AFRCC with saving 108 lives last year. CAP’s 58,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief, and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state, and local agencies. As a nonprofit organization, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education resources. Members also serve as mentors to 24,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
